How to Prepare Your Quilt
for Longarm Quilting
Backing Fabric Requirements
The backing fabric needs to be 8 inches wider than the quilt top on all 4 sides to properly be placed on the frame. Example; if your quilt top is 40x40 your backing needs to be 48x48.
Pet Hair & Lint
Please be sure the quilt is free from pet hair or extra lint. I recommend taking a lint roller to the top of the quilt and backing prior to sending.
Press The Quilt Top
Press the quilt top seams flat and to one side or open and be sure all seams are sewn and there are no loose stitches.
Press The Backing Seams
Press the back seams open to reduce bulk on the longarm and to improve the look and feel of the finished quilt. Please use ½” seams if piecing your quilt backing.
Horizontal vs Vertical Backing Seams
If your backing has seams, and if you are able to, I prefer Horizontal seams. This helps the backing roll up nicely on the machine rails. I can make any seam direction work if the pattern of the fabric does not
make this possible. Horizontal is not a requirement just a preference.
Square Your Top & Back
Please square your quilt top and backing before sending. This ensures everything sits on the machine nice and square.
Mark the Top of the Quilt
Mark the top front of your quilt with a pin or piece of tape to ensure it is loaded onto the frame correct direction. Please do not baste your quilt.
Pinning & Basting
There is no need to pin or baste your quilt when sending it in for the longarm.
Trim All Threads
Be sure to trim all loose threads from sewing your seams and quilt top together. Some fabric frays and this is ok I can work with fraying on the edges.
Photos of your Quilt
Once your quilt has been completed from machine quilting, I will take photos of your quilt and text or
email the images to you. The images may be used however you like, I just request that if you are
posting them publicly that you credit me for the quilting and photos.
Mailing your Quilt
I live in Spokane Washington and would be happy to receive your quilt by mailing, Quilt top, backing and batting by mail. Please fold the top, backing and batting separately and place in plastic bag before packaging in an envelope or box. When mailing please be sure to get tracking. The quilt will be sent back with tracking and will be charged to your final invoice. I am happy to use UPS, USPS or FedEx to send your finished quilt top back.
